Can you get pregnant on your period?

The short answer

Yes, it's possible to get pregnant from sex during your period, although it's less likely than at other times. Pregnancy depends on ovulation, and you're generally at your least fertile during your period. But 'less likely' is not 'impossible', and several factors can close that gap.

So if you're relying on avoiding sex during your period as contraception, it's not reliable.

Why it can still happen

Two things make period-time pregnancy possible. First, sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about five days. If you have a short cycle and ovulate early, sperm from sex during your period can still be around when you release an egg.

Second, not everyone can tell a true period from other bleeding — spotting around ovulation, for instance, can be mistaken for a period, and that's a fertile time. Irregular cycles make this even harder to predict.

If you want to avoid or plan pregnancy

If you don't want to conceive, use reliable contraception rather than trying to time around your cycle. If you're trying to conceive, your most fertile window is the few days leading up to and including ovulation — usually mid-cycle — not during your period.

A GP can help with contraception that fits your life, or with understanding your fertile window if you're trying to conceive. A telehealth consult is an easy way to get clear, personal advice.
